A search for moral “brakes” on the conscience of religious people such that no wrong will ever be done by fanatics of those religions. My understanding of the fanatic may also not be sufficient.

Kant’s understanding of the respect humans involuntarily hold for the moral law.
He quoted a French philosopher (I forget the name) as saying “I may bow before a king for whom I have no respect, but internally I do not bowâ€. Kant replied (my gloss), “And I may refuse to bow before a man more humble than I who does what I know to be a decent and costly act, but internally I bow, whether I like it or notâ€. I think Kant was trying to show at this point in the development of his moral ideas, that the feeling of respect has nothing to do with any pleasure.
