Kant on the use of scripture to proscribe human liberty
December 25, 2009
Those, from Pope down to local pastor to parishioner, when calling for limitations to the liberty of people based on interpretations of divine communications, are obligated to preface their comments with this solemn oath: In the name of Christ I call upon God to damn my soul to eternal hell if what I am telling you is not what God meant. An oath is not necessary ordinarily regarding an interpretation, but certainly in those cases where the liberty of a person is at stake, e.g., to marry whom one might.
